Our small-group Glenfinnan Viaduct & Loch Ness tour begins by departing Edinburgh and travelling north, leaving the city behind for the rugged, dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands; a land of legendary monsters, soaring mountains, and epic history.
Day One - The Highlands & Loch Ness
Our journey north begins with a stop in the town of Callander, known as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’. Nestled on the banks of the River Teith, it's the perfect place to absorb the Highland atmosphere before we continue our scenic drive. Next, we travel through the awe-inspiring landscape of Glencoe, arguably Scotland’s most famous and historic glen. Site of the infamous 1692 massacre, you’ll have time to stand amongst the towering peaks and learn the stories of this hauntingly beautiful valley. We'll continue our journey along the banks of the Great Glen towards the world's most famous body of water; Loch Ness. We’ll stop to explore the magnificent ruins of Urquhart Castle, perched dramatically on the lochside. Take in the stunning views and keep a keen eye out for ‘Nessie’ before we continue to the northern tip of the loch. Our final stop of the day is the delightful village of Fort Augustus, where you can watch boats navigate the impressive staircase of locks on the Caledonian Canal. By the end of the afternoon, we’ll make the short journey to the adventure capital of the Highlands where we'll spend the night.
OVERNIGHT: Fort William
Day Two - The Jacobite Steam Train & Highland Perthshire
The second day of our tour begins with a journey to one of Scotland’s most iconic sights; the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Instantly recognisable from the Harry Potter films, we’ll stop at the viewpoint to admire the magnificent 21-arch railway bridge and the stunning scenery of Loch Shiel. Next, we turn south, travelling through more spectacular Highland scenery and along the shores of Loch Laggan, famed for its beautiful sandy beach and for being a filming location for the TV series 'Monarch of the Glen'. We will stop for lunch in one of the traditional Highland villages nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. This afternoon, our journey continues into the forests and rivers of Highland Perthshire, making a final stop in the lovely Victorian spa town of Pitlochry. Here you can wander through the charming main street or visit the famous hydro-electric dam and salmon ladder. By late afternoon, it will be time to begin our return journey to Edinburgh, where our tour concludes.
Return To Edinburgh By late-afternoon, our 2-day journey through the Highlands turns back south towards Edinburgh. The Glenfinnan Viaduct & Loch Ness tour returns at approximately 6:30 pm.
