Day One - The Cotswolds
Our small-group Cotswolds, Bath & Stonehenge tour begins by departing London and travelling north-west towards the beautiful countryside of The Cotswolds; home to rolling-hills and sheep-farming traditions. Our first stop is one of the region's most charming market towns, Chipping Camden, which is home to ‘the most beautiful street in Britain’. Wander along the High Street, which has 270 protected buildings and see the historic church as well as the ancient Market Hall. Next, we continue towards Stow-on-the-Wold, a centre of the wool industry during the Middle Ages. This was the location of the last battle of the English Civil War and a favourite place of JRR Tolkien. We'll stop in Stow for lunch, perhaps at England's oldest pub? After lunch we'll travel a short distance to Bourton-on-the-Water, nicknamed 'the Venice of The Cotswolds' due to its idyllic river setting. Take a stroll over the low-arched bridges or visit the much-loved 'model village', a 1/9th scale replica village build by master craftsmen. Next, we'll continue our journey through the Cotswolds, travelling along the country lanes towards Bibury, described as the 'prettiest village in England'. Instantly recognisable is the Arlington Row: a picture-postcard set of cottages which date to the 1380's. By the end of the afternoon we’ll arrive into Cirencester, known as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’ where we’ll spend the night.
OVERNIGHT: Cirencester
Day Two - Bath & Stonehenge
The second day of our tour begins by departing Cirencester, but our time in The Cotswolds is not quite finished as we make the short journey to Castle Combe; described as one of the ‘prettiest villages in the world’. Stroll along the quaint and charming street of this small settlement and absorb the quiet Cotswolds atmosphere. Next, we continue to perhaps the most beautiful city in Britain; Bath. Originally established by the Romans as a Spa Town nearly 2,000 years ago, it’s said that the water here possesses healing qualities. We’ll have plenty of time to explore the city and visit all of the key locations including; the Roman Baths, the architecture of the Royal Crescent and Circus, the Jane Austen Centre, Bath Abbey and also have some lunch. Then, this afternoon we continue towards one of Britain’s most iconic locations; Stonehenge. This is the world’s most famous stone-circle, which may have been constructed 4,500 years ago, although the true meaning of the monument is still not fully understood. Perhaps an ancient burial ground, a solar calendar, place of worship or alien construction? Many theories have been put forward regarding the origin of Stonehenge. We’ll attempt to unravel some of the mysteries of these stones and then by late-afternoon it will be time to return back to London where our journey concludes.
