Iconic and steeped in history, the White Cliffs of Dover have long been one of Britain’s most recognisable landmarks. Located on the far corner of the Kent coast, these striking chalk cliffs stand high facing the English Channel, symbolising resilience, hope and 'home' for returning Brits. But what exactly makes them so special, and how can you experience them yourself? Here’s everything you need to know.
The White Cliffs are found along the southeastern coastline of England, in the picturesque county of Kent. Overlooking the English Channel, the cliffs stretch approximately 8 miles (13 km), providing an awe-inspiring natural spectacle easily reachable from London.
These striking cliffs are made primarily of chalk, which consists of billions of microscopic marine organisms known as coccolithophores. Over millions of years, these tiny organisms accumulated on the seabed, compressed, and gradually rose above sea level, forming the dramatic cliffs we see today. Their vivid white appearance is maintained by continuous natural erosion from the elements.
The White Cliffs of Dover are far more than just a natural wonder—they are deeply embedded in Britain’s history and national identity. During both World Wars, the cliffs symbolised strength and resilience, serving as Britain’s frontline defence against invasion. Dover Castle, situated atop the cliffs, played a pivotal role in military history, with secret wartime tunnels famously used during Operation Dynamo, the evacuation from Dunkirk.
The cliffs also resonate culturally, immortalised in Vera Lynn’s wartime song “The White Cliffs of Dover,” which became an anthem of hope during dark times.
The White Cliffs of Dover are easily accessible by car or train. From London, a direct train journey to Dover Priory Station takes approximately one hour, followed by a short taxi or bus ride. Alternatively, joining an organised tour from London offers convenience, comfort, and the advantage of expert insights along the way.
Yes, visiting the cliffs themselves is free! However, parking and access to some facilities managed by the National Trust, such as the visitor centre, require a modest fee.
The most memorable way to experience the cliffs is on foot. A scenic walking route offers stunning panoramic views across the English Channel, stretching all the way to France on clear days. The walk can vary in length, but a comfortable, leisurely exploration usually takes around two hours.
If you want to delve deeper into the history and marvel at the cliffs without the hassle of planning, our Canterbury & Dover Cliffs Tour provides a seamless experience. The tour includes visits to Canterbury Cathedral, historic Deal, and a guided walk along the cliffs themselves. Our friendly and knowledgeable guides ensure you gain fascinating insights into the region’s rich heritage, creating memories that last long after the journey home.

This was our first, but will be our ONLY way to sight see in Europe. GoTours has done their homework, you see only the best of the best. The staff (We had James) knows their stuff. The journey from London to Cotswold was very comfortable on their small private coach. This is VERY important as many governing agencies in the Cotswold recently legislated against the large travel busses. Those busses are clogging the narrow streets and the residents are understandably upset. GoTours’ buses are well within the limits and with a max group size of 20 or so, we were welcomed.
We did the full day, 4 stop Cotswold tour. James was incredibly informative. He knew so much history and shared thought provoking insight to each little village. And for the ride, James had a custom soundtrack/playlist to enhance every moment of the drive!
We had plenty of time at each stop, and James made sure to point out the “must see” aspect of each village.
I honestly think we underpaid for the quality of the experience.
Our experience with Go Tour UK was simply fantastic. They are extremely organised, competent and pay attention to every detail.
We were lucky enough to have Christian as our guide and driver: knowledgeable, friendly and very professional.
We found this tour by chance on the internet, looking for a way to visit the Cotswolds, and it turned out to be the best possible choice.
We were on our honeymoon, and this tour was one of the highlights of our holiday.
Although our mother tongue is Italian, we had no difficulty following Christian's explanations: clear, engaging and accessible.
We really recommend this experience to everyone, even those who don't speak English perfectly. The tour format, with small minivans and small groups, makes everything more personal, welcoming and respectful of the places visited.
Unlike large tour buses, here there is an intimate and relaxed atmosphere, without disturbing the villagers. You will be guided through places rich in history and advised on where to find the best of every dish you want to try or brooch you want to buy :)
An authentic, magical and unforgettable experience. We will definitely return, even with multi-day tours.
Five stars well deserved!
Excellent five day tour of north England in a small group (15 max) with great driver/guide. (Our second outing with this company). Good balance of visits to sites and driving. And smaller vehicle than a tour bus permitted us to go along on smaller, quainter roads. A definite plus. Would highly recommend them!
Driver Len kept us well informed while exploring the countryside. His affable & kind personality made the trip extra special.
Our tour was fantastic! We couldn't have asked for a more organised and enjoyable trip. With limited time available, we were keen to visit all the well known and scenic spots and Go Tours didnt dissapoint!
We night-stopped in excellent Bed and Breakfast establishments in Exeter and Falmouth and staff were eager to meet all our needs.
David, our guide and driver, was most knowledgeable and informative, very funny and made our trip so worthwhile!
Thank you for helping us make so many memorable moments during our holiday, guys.
We'll definitely be joining you on future tours around the UK and would highly recommend this tour to all visitors!
