Our Loch Lomond and the Highlands tour from Edinburgh (with Hairy Coos) begins by leaving Edinburgh behind and travelling west towards Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, where wooded hills and sparkling lochs begin to shape the landscape.
Our route will bring us to the shores of Loch Lomond, a beautiful lake immortalised in songs, poems, and legend. Our first stop is the pretty village of Balmaha, where we step aboard the morning waterbus for a serene cruise across Loch Lomond. Gliding between tree-clad islands with Ben Lomond rising above the waters, this is the ideal way to experience the tranquil waters and surrounding mountain views of one of Scotland’s most famous lochs. We disembark the boat in the picturesque village of Luss, where stone cottages and colourful gardens line the streets. There’s time here to enjoy lunch and 'soak in' the views before our journey continues into the Highlands.
Travelling north through beautiful scenery we'll arrive at Killin, and the spectacular Falls of Dochart tumble beneath the old stone bridge, a perfect spot for photographs. Then we'll continue a little further and pause at Kilmahog, for an encounter with some of Scotland’s most beloved residents—Highland cows, or as locals affectionately call them, ‘Hairy Coos’. With their long, shaggy coats and curved horns, these gentle giants are a living symbol of the Highlands. Continuing south we'll see the dramatic sight of The Kelpies—a pair of colossal, 30-metre (100-foot) high horse-head sculptures. We’ll stop at these gleaming steel structures that pay homage to the mythical water spirits said to inhabit Scotland’s lochs and rivers, and also serve as a tribute to Scotland’s equine and industrial heritage.
